Pennsylvania State Police Troop G honored Lt. James Wagner Wednesday for his heroic actions last year on June 17 in Lewistown, when he confronted an armed individual who fired shots at patrol vehicles parked outside the Lewistown barracks.

Lt. Wagner was critically injured and Trooper Jacques Rougeau was killed by the gunman.

Lt. Wagner was presented with a newly commissioned service ribbon, known as the Lewistown Service Award, for his exemplary actions and sacrifice that day.

His peers at the Pennsylvania State Police said that his outlook on his injury and road to recovery have been nothing short of inspirational to all of them.

Lt. Col. George Bivens, Deputy Commissioner of Operations, Pennsylvania State Police, said, “He has always been positive and upbeat. He has never allowed himself to pity himself or, you know, be upset and bitter about the whole thing. He looks to the future; he looks to his recovery; and he still looks to how he can still work with the men and women here at the Pennsylvania State Police.”

Their outlook on him was immediately noticeable right after the ribbon was presented to him.

In turn, he thanked his brothers and sisters in uniform, and told them how proud he is of each and every one of them, and well as how it is an honor to serve alongside them.
